“Star Trek: The Unsettling Stars” Review by Treklit.com
Tags:Alan Dean Foster, New Book Review, Trek Lit Reviews
Treklit.com has added a new review for Alan Dean Foster‘s “Star Trek: The Unsettling Stars”:
This novel was a long time coming. Originally written around the time of the first “Kelvin Timeline” film, Star Trek (2009), the publication of this and three other novels were delayed indefinitely. The reason for the delay? According to the powers that be, there was concern that events depicted in the novels might contradict future plans for films set in the Kelvin Timeline. Then, a decade later, two of the shelved novels were resurrected, and apparently the prior concerns were no longer an issue. This one, by Alan Dean Foster, was originally titled Refugees. The novel was given a name change, and according to the author, a small part of the ending was revised, but other than that, The Unsettling Stars is relatively unchanged from the original draft that was turned in a decade earlier.

Scifibulletin.com has added a new review for Angel Hernandez and Mike Chen‘s “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Dog of War TPB”:
Billed as a ‘lost episode’ of sorts this is another really strong entry in the current line of Trek comics. Antos and Real are fantastic editors and each one of these mini-series has felt exactly like the show whose world it’s set in. In this case, Chen’s script gives the surprisingly large DS9 cast a lot to do and cleverly balances whimsy with the horrors of the Dominion War.

The book revisits familiar planets from The Original Series at the beginning, exploring the aftermath of McCoy’s Prime Directive breach in “A Piece of the Action.” The societal consequences of leaving behind technology offer a compelling narrative backdrop. Nymira’s engagement with gangsters on the planet adds depth to her character, showcasing her adaptability in morally ambiguous environments.

“Star Trek: The Lost Era: Catalyst of Sorrows” Review by Atboundarysedge.com
Tags:Atboundarysedge.com, Margaret Wander Bonanno, New Book Review
Atboundarysedge.com has added a new review for Margaret Wander Bonanno‘s “Star Trek: The Lost Era: Catalyst of Sorrows”:
The Star trek literary canon is chock-full of crossovers. Without the need to manage actor’s fees, budgets, and timelines, pretty much any crew can meet any other. The obvious examples are series such as Destiny or Typhon Pact, which regularly saw crossovers between The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. On a smaller scale there is Greg Cox’s No Time Like the Past, which sees Seven of Nine thrown through time to the era of Kirk and co. These crossovers can be fun and entertaining, but oftentimes they don’t make a whole lot of sense. This, however, is not the case with Catalyst of Sorrows, which boasts perhaps the finest one-off multi-series crossover I’ve seen to date.

Treknews.net has added a new review for Greg Cox‘s “Star Trek: Legacies: Book 1: Captain To Captain”:
There are near-countless Star Trek novels out there. Unlike the production of movies, episodes, or video games over the franchise’s lifetime, there have pretty much always been new novels readers can look forward to. These novels, never canon but always a celebration of well-loved characters, ideas, and places, have been integral to building Star Trek’s legacy. Let’s pull one such celebration out of the pile and retro-review Star Trek: Legacies: Captain to Captain, the first book in a trilogy designed to celebrate the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Tags:Atboundarysedge.com, Ilsa J. Bick, New Book Review
Atboundarysedge.com has added a new review for Ilsa J. Bick‘s “Star Trek: The Lost Era: Well Of Souls”:
I love the concept of the Lost Era. A set of standalone novels that fill the gap between the end of the Original Series and the start of the Next Generation. There’s plenty of space here for good storytelling. All those future historical events that were only ever referenced offhand. The origins of all those much-loved characters. The fates of those who went missing along the way. Telling the story of the Enterprise-C is a great idea, as all we know if it we glean from a single episode. This book really had everything going for it. Unfortunately, it didn’t go anywhere with those opportunities.

Atboundarysedge.com has added a new review for Michael Jan Friedman‘s “Star Trek: Stargazer: Book 1: Gauntlet”:
One of the curiosities of Star Trek is that it asserts Jean-Luc Picard to be fifty-nine years of age when he is promoted to captain of the Enterprise-D. Significantly older than Patrick Stewart was at the time of filming, though the inimitable actor certainly carried off the role well. What this meant for the literary canon is that there was a significant amount of backstory to develop. A large portion of that life was chronicled in Christopher L. Bennett’s The Buried Age, a book which built heavily on the work established by Michael Jan Friedman in his six-volume Stargazer series. It is the first Stargazer novel, Gauntlet, that brings us here today.

Trekcentral.net has added a new review for Christopher Cantwell‘s “Star Trek: Defiant #11”:
The Star Trek: Defiant arc concludes in Star Trek: Defiant #11, which is out now from IDW Publishing. The Another Piece of the Action arc has been an interesting four-part story. On one hand, having this crew become an insane clandestine organization has been great fun. However, on the other, we’ve been touching obscure characters, and the story hasn’t been as clearly defined as the previous arc.

“Star Trek: Picard: No Man’s Land” Adapted to paperback novel!
Star Trek: No Man’s Land picks up right after the action-packed season one conclusion of Star Trek: Picard. While Raffi and Seven of Nine are enjoying some much-needed R&R in Raffi’s remote hideaway, their downtime is interrupted by an urgent cry for help: a distant, beleaguered planet has enlisted the Fenris Rangers to save an embattled evacuation effort. As Raffi and Seven team up to rescue a mysteriously ageless professor whose infinity-shaped talisman has placed him in the deadly sights of a vicious Romulan warlord, they take tentative steps to explore the attraction depicted in the final moments of Picard season one.
Star Trek: No Man’s Land is a rich, fully dramatized Star Trek: Picard adventure as Michelle Hurd and Jeri Ryan pick up their respective characters once more. Written for audio by Kirsten Beyer, a cocreator, writer, and producer on the hit Paramount+ series Star Trek: Picard, and Mike Johnson, a veteran contributor to the Star Trek comic books publishing program, this audio original offers consummate Star Trek storytelling brilliantly reimagined for the audio medium.
In addition to riveting performances from Hurd and Ryan exploring new layers of Raffi and Seven’s relationship, Star Trek: No Man’s Land features a full cast of actors playing all-new characters in the Star Trek: Picard universe, including Fred Tatasciore, Jack Cutmore-Scott, John Kassir, Chris Andrew Ciulla, Lisa Flanagan, Gibson Frazier, Lameece Issaq, Natalie Naudus, Xe Sands, and Emily Woo Zeller, and is presented in a soundscape crackling with exclusive Star Trek sound effects. Drawing listeners into a dramatic, immersive narrative experience that is at once both instantly familiar and spectacularly new, Star Trek: No Man’s Land goes boldly where no audio has gone before as fans new and old clamor to discover what happens next.
Previously released as an audio drama, “No Man’s Land” is being released November 5th, 2024 as a 112 page paperback novel. This isn’t the normal order that books are released in, but I’m happy it’s happening!

Dailystartreknews.com has added a new review for Sam Maggs‘s “Star Trek: Picard’s Academy #5”:
I’ve been reviewing Picard’s Academy for a couple months now and I thoroughly enjoy it. The comic is sweet and heartwarming while still managing to keep a suspenseful plot. It includes many references to TNG but does not require the reader to have ever seen TNG to enjoy the comic.

“Star Trek: The Empty Chair” Review by Atboundarysedge.com

Atboundarysedge.com has added a new review for Diane Duane‘s “Star Trek: The Empty Chair”:
2006 was a strange time for Star Trek. It was the fortieth anniversary of the show, but the show was not currently on air. Enterprise had only recently been cancelled, and the next onscreen adventure would not appear until 2009. Star Trek was, for all intents and purposes, dead in the water. The good news though, is that Trek had survived in literary form. Free from the need to remain consistent with multiple television shows, the books had the chance to go pretty much crazy. This was the era of the relaunches, which continued The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager beyond what we saw on screen. It also heralded the age of original novel series.

Redshirtsalwaysdie.com has added a new review for Chris Kreski and William Shatner‘s “Star Trek: Movie Memories”:
In the ever changing landscape of the Star Trek franchise, there stands a few constants that we as Trekkies can always count on. Captain Picard will always order “tea, Earl Grey, hot” from the food replicator (but not Admiral Picard). If given a choice a Vulcan will always choose logic over emotion, and every few years or so William Shatner will write another autobiography.
