Ryan North Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com

This week’s conversation is with Ryan North, author of the current Fantastic Four series, Adventure Time comics, Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, Lower Decks (2022), Shaxs’ Best Day, and the upcoming Lower Decks: Warp Your Own Way and Lower Decks (2024). A slight disclaimer, I’ve actually been emailing Ryan for years and years, he ran an advertising system named “Project Wonderful” that was indeed wonderful and I loved it very much.  It’s not around now though and that makes me sad.

Our conversation roams from his fantastic work on the first Lower Decks mini series, then moves to how to build a choose your own adventure type of story.  Turns out that the upcoming Trek story isn’t his first attempt at this!

Back in 2018 he wrote “How To Invent Everything” and we talk about how frustrating it would be to time travel without knowing how anything actually works.  He was so frustrated with this idea he went out and wrote a book that would let any stray traveler of time jump start the wheels of invention and get you back to the style of civilization that you were previously accustomed to.  Some of that lead to what I personally call “hated knowledge” which is when you learn so much about something that’s broken that you hate knowing all that.  For me it’s a carpet cleaner that I’ve taken apart 50 times and could fix in the dark.  That kind of experience leads to learning how to take things apart and trouble shoot and is actually a good thing, but I still hate it. .

I ask him if he’d be able to write a lower decks literature book and his answer will shock you! (he said yes and it would be a blast to do)

We finish up our conversation by talking about Eaglemoss’s spaceship subscription program that we both got pulled into and I give one final plug for my fishtank that’s on twitch (and has a crashed 1701A in it).

Ryan North can be found at his  website, Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, and Twitter.

“Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek” Review by Warpfactortrek.com

Warpfactortrek.com has added a new review for Nana Visitor‘s “Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek”:

When I was asked to review Nana Visitor’s forthcoming book Open a Channel: The Women of Star Trek, I jumped at the chance. Not only did she play one of my favorite Star Trek characters (Major Kira in Deep Space Nine), but Nana herself is one of my favorite actors in the franchise and continues to captivate me with what she’s offered of herself since. This book is, in a word, impressive. It is a serious and detailed dive into every female character in every Star Trek series. But it’s so much more than an encyclopedic listing on the topic.

“Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek” Review by Borg.com

Borg.com has added a new review for Nana Visitor‘s “Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek”:

For literally decades trading card series have highlighted the diversity of the women characters in the Star Trek franchise via Women of Star Trek cards. The key champion of the subject has always been the groundbreaking Nichelle Nichols, who via speeches, books, and in-person events shared what it meant being the first woman of color in the main cast of a major TV series as Lieutenant Uhura. She would recount to anyone who asked her the conversation she had with Martin Luther King, Jr. when she considered leaving the series, and he encouraged her to stay–she had not yet realized the impact she had. But nobody has really looked at what it means to portray women in Star Trek, both behind the scenes as actors and writers, and in front as heroines, really exploring every aspect of the human condition.

“Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek” Review by Trekmovie.com

Trekmovie.com has added a new review for Nana Visitor‘s “Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek”:

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s Nana Visitor’s expansive new book exploring the female characters and experiences of women who worked on Star Trek in front of and behind the camera is out today. This is going to sound odd, but it’s almost a disservice that this is a coffee table-style book. It’s large and heavy with glossy pages, and while the beauty treatment is deserved, it’s almost a contradiction to the type of book it actually is. This is a book to be read cover to cover, then referenced and quoted over and over again—and maybe even carried around with you.

Out Today: “Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek”

Out today: “Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman’s Trek“, by Nana Visitor.

Nana Visitor, Star Trek’s Kira Nerys, explores how the series has portrayed and influenced women. Interviews with the stars, writers, producers, and celebrity fans reveal the struggles and triumphs of women both behind and in front of the camera throughout the sixty-year history of Star Trek, and how they have mirrored the experiences of women everywhere.

The groundbreaking casting of Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura in 1966 took women and people of color into a newly-imagined future. But it was the 1960s and she had to do it in a miniskirt.

Since then, each Star Trek show has both re?ected the values of its time and imagined a more future in which all genders were equal. In her first book, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine star Nana Visitor sets out to discover both how Star Trek led the way for women, and how it was trapped in its own era.

For Visitor, this is more than a book about Star Trek. It’s about how society and the stories we tell have evolved in the last 60 years, and how the role of women has changed in that time.

STAR AUTHOR: Written by Star Trek actor Nana Visitor, famous for playing Major Kira Nerys. This is both her story and her journey through the stories of other women involved with Star Trek from the 1960s to the 21st century.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS: Features interviews with almost every woman who has starred in Star Trek, including Kate Mulgrew, Terry Farrell, Denise Crosby, Mary Wiseman, and Rebecca Romijn.

INSPIRING STORIES: Explore how Star Trek has influenced women in the real world, including soldiers, scientists, and even astronauts. In one remarkable episode, author Nana Visitor interviewed astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti while she was in orbit around Earth on the International Space Station.

PIONEERING SERIES: Star Trek has often taken a leading role in promoting women on both sides of the camera. It had women writers when they were rare, and it introduced female captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager in 1995.

Happy 2024 Birthday to Simon Hawke!

(no image available)

Happy birthday to Simon Hawke!

Simon Hawke is an American author of mainly science fiction and fantasy novels. He was born Nicholas Valentin Yermakov, but began writing as Simon Hawke in 1984 and later changed his legal name to Hawke. He has also written near future adventure novels under the pen name J. D. Masters and a series of humorous mystery novels. He was the Colorado Writer of the Year, 1992.

As Nicholas Yermakov, his early books were published in 1981-1984 including two Battlestar Galactica novelizations. Since re-launching his career as Simon Hawke in 1984, he has produced a large volume of lighter fiction. Almost all of his books published after 1984 have been either part of a series and/or tie-in novels and novelizations.

His first major work as Simon Hawke was the Timewars series, which recounts the adventures of an organization tasked with protecting history from being changed by time travellers. In the world of the series, many people and events we consider fictional are historical, and vice versa; the action of each book in the series weaves in and out of the events of a famous work of literature. For example, in the first book in the series time travellers contesting the fate of Richard I of England become caught up in Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe.

He has also written a series of humorous murder mysteries which features a young William Shakespeare and a fictional friend, Symington “Tuck” Smythe.

“Star Trek: Picard: No Man’s Land” Review by Treknews.net

Treknews.net has added a new review for Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson‘s “Star Trek: Picard: No Man’s Land”:

In what might be the first for a Star Trek audiobook, Star Trek: Picard: No Man’s Land gets a physical release treatment. The audiobook, which came out in 2022 and was written by Trek vets Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson, tells a story centering on Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd, who reprises her role from Star Trek: Picard) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan, reprising her role from Star Trek: Voyager and Picard) set in between the first and second seasons of Picard. Whereas before today fans could only enjoy this story in its original audiobook form, those who eschew audio dramas can now read the script of this production. But the question is: would you want to?

RIP Star Trek: Explorer?

Several trusted sources on Facebook are lamenting the end of Star Trek: Explorer and while there’s no official word yet, they’re in the know enough to trust what they’re saying.  It’s sad that this iteration of the Trek magazines never found it’s footing. I was personally never happy that it was only coming out every few months instead of monthly, as it made for a situation where I didn’t know if I should be expecting it or not.

Christopher Sequeira Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com

This week’s guest is Christopher Sequeira, author of 2023’s “Holo-Ween” mini series that just had it’s TPB collection released along with a gorgeous hardcover collected edition that was exclusive to the IDW webstore. I just got my copy in the mail this week!

We touch on his experiences with writing and publishing other comics, both as an independent author and as the editor in chief of IPI Comics, which currently has some pretty cool Sherlock and Lovecraft content coming out and even has a Human Fly series, which I was only familiar with as a Marvel comic, but there’s a cool back history to the character that he clues me in to.

We get into a long talk about Dracula, the history of the characters, the copyright shenanigans that have happened in the past and his involvement in a collection of Dracula stories that include some true stories.  No joke!

We move onto Sherlock and how fantastic it is to be able to play in that universe and how all the stories he publishes with the great detective are written in a way that the stories would fit right into the original books.

We wrap up the call by talking about possible sequels to the Holo-ween series, of which I’m a huge proponent!

“Star Trek Discovery: The Art of Glenn Hetrick’s Alchemy Studios” Review by Trekmovie.com

Trekmovie.com has added a new review for Joe Nazzaro‘s “Star Trek Discovery: The Art of Glenn Hetrick’s Alchemy Studios”:

What you expect from a big, glossy Star Trek art book is tons of glorious behind-the-scenes and on-set photographs of the amazing craft and artistry that goes into making your favorite science fiction franchise. And this impressive coffee table book has all that in spades. But what you don’t expect is a fascinating look into the logistics of actually producing the artwork at a scale and at a pace that is required for creating episodic television. And it’s gems like the quote above that, scattered throughout this volume, make this latest Trek art book from Titan as much fun to read as to look at.

Atboundarysedge.com has added a new review for Peter David‘s “Star Trek: The Next Generation: Before Dishonor”:

Two weeks after reading Before Dishonor, I’m still torn on how I feel about it. On the one hand, it’s colossally stupid. On the other hand, it’s one of the most compulsively readable books to come out of the TNG relaunch.

New Star Trek Book: “Intersectional Humanism and Star Trek: Discovery: Warping into a Connected Future”

Intersectional Humanism and Star Trek: Discovery: Warping into a Connected Future by Alyson R. Buckman has been added to the Star Trek Book Club!

Intersectional Humanism and Star Trek: Discovery focuses on the shift from the liberal humanism of the Star Trek franchise to the intersectional humanism of Star Trek: Discovery. Featuring a great deal of diversity both in front of and behind the camera, Discovery affirms the guiding principle of the franchise: infinite diversity in infinite combinations. Arguing that the focus of Discovery is a connection between a variety of beings and ways of being in the world, the author analyzes the relationships among humanoids and machines, animals, and between each other as well as the representation of trauma in the series. The author finds that, while there are reversions to some of the more problematic elements of liberal humanism over the course of the series, ultimately it forms connections that will progress humanity and deepen our relationship to each other and the world around us.

The book is currently scheduled to be published on October 15, 2024

“Star Trek: The Next Generation: 49 The Q Continuum 3: Q-Strike” Review by Deepspacespines.com

Deepspacespines.com has added a new review for Greg Cox‘s “Star Trek: The Next Generation: 49 The Q Continuum 3: Q-Strike”:

In today’s episode, the Faal family comes down with a nasty case of silver eye, and Zero breaks out of galactic confinement as Q’s PowerPoint finally reaches its last slide. But it will take a blast of minty fresh breath to counter Zero’s hot air. Why is Picard so slow on the uptake? What kind of damage can writing too much Q do to your prose? And has my teaching career coincidentally prepared me for this moment? All this and more in Q-Strike, the book that’s on its way to get some head.

“Star Trek: The Next Generation: 1 A Time To Be Born” Review by Atboundarysedge.com

Atboundarysedge.com has added a new review for John Vornholt‘s “Star Trek: The Next Generation: 1 A Time To Be Born”:

After The Next Generation finished, the adventures of Picard and his crew continued in a series of feature-length films. The first three released while Deep Space Nine and Voyager were still airing, but the final film, Nemesis, served as a capstone for an entire era of Trek storytelling. A few years later, the Enterprise crew returned in literary form to truly kick off the Litverse of novels. To pave the way for this new age, a series of nine books was commissioned. Set between Insurrection and Nemesis, these novels told the story of the breakup of the Enterprise crew in the run-up to their final on-screen mission. With one exception, this series comprised of a sequence of two-part adventures, and while it is very much a Next Generation story, it folded in enough of other series to simple bear the Star Trek banner.

James Swallow Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com

This week’s conversation is with James Swallow who has an upcoming Trek novel coming out in 2025 titled “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Toward The Night“.  We start the conversation by talking about that story, obviously he wasn’t able to go into too much detail due to not wanting to spoil the story, but I’ll say this much, I verified I had a preorder for it after talking to him!

We follow that up by talking about his comic book work and how much he’s love to have a chance to write some Trek books, an endeavor I would fully support.  We move onto talking about his recent publishing experiences writing comics and the books that made his childhood, including the original Ghost Rider.  I even get an answer about which version of the character is his favorite.  The answer is obvious, but we have a cool discussion to get to that inevitable answer.

James is also an extremely accomplished Warhammer 40k author, with 20 books written in the franchise.  I get to completely geek out with him about how cool it is to have such a long running series of books that were authored by so many talented authors.

Even with the dozens upon dozens of tie-in books that he’s written, he’s written several of his own stories, including the Marc Dane series and two stand alone stories that have absolutely nothing to do with each other, Dark Horizon and Airside, but if you check out the covers for them, you’ll see why I asked if there were connections due to the aeronautically themed covers.  They’re truly not, but my question prompted a fun detour in the conversation to talking about airplanes for about half the interview.  If you like airplanes, you’ll love it.  If not…sorry?  Just enjoy the joy of two nerds nerding out over a fun topic that I know much less than the he does.  He does a great job of making me interested in both the books, so I’m going to likely end up reading them soon.

We move on from airplanes to talk about attending Shore-Leave, he’s gone to more shows than me, but we both agree it’s the best place to be if you enjoy Treklit.

Out Today: “Space, the Feminist Frontier: Essays on Sex and Gender in Star Trek”

Out today: “Space, the Feminist Frontier: Essays on Sex and Gender in Star Trek“, by .

For nearly 60 years, Star Trek has imagined humanity’s future while reflecting its present. Star Trek: The Original Series debuted with three male leads, but in the wake of a Trek renaissance that began with Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, additional series have explored the frontiers of representation, making the present moment ripe for new critical engagement and thoughtful reflection on the narratives that have shaped the journey thus far.

Using the lens of feminist criticism and theory, this collection of essays presents a diverse array of academic and fan scholars engaging with the past, present, and future of Star Trek. Contributors consider issues like Klingon marriage, Majel Barrett’s legacy, the Bechdel-Wallace test, LGBTQ+ representation, and more. They offer updated readings on legacy characters while also addressing wholly new characters like Michael Burnham, Beckett Mariner, and Adira Tal. Their essays provide some of the first critical examinations of the newest additions to the Trek franchise, including Picard, Strange New Worlds and Lower Decks.

Adeena Mignogna Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com

I just had a fantastic conversation with Adeena Mignogna, who I met at Shore-Leave.  She was a presenter doing a talk about space junk, which was interesting enough to hold my attention for an hour and exactly what I was looking for, but she ended the presentation by saying she was going to be in the author room later that night.   I already had plans to stop by that room to pick up a bundle of comics and books and swung by her table, picking up a copy of Lunar Logic (which I’m now about 25% of the way through) and chatted with her for a few minutes.

Turns out she has not one, but TWO stories coming out in Star Trek: Explorer, the first of which should be out now, but I feel like I’ve been saying that for over a month at this point.  What’s going on with Titan?!

Lunar Logic is just her most recent book, it’s a pleasant stand alone story of a group of robots on the moon, and she has a series of books in a “Robots Galaxy” series that has a follow up collection of books that she’s currently working on now.

She has a wonderful podcast named “The Big Scifi Podcast” that you should out if you’re into science and science fiction!

Our hour long conversation includes a sidebar about how she enjoys world building and stories set in the background of the Trek Universe, astronomy, how her work is aimed at adults but is safe for kids, and her writing process, which involves getting up at 5am.  Yes, really.

I talk way too long about my love of IDW’s comic books, but I think I got my point across and I’m really hoping that she’ll check out some of my suggestions and let us know what she thinks!

Oh and in the last 30 seconds she throws it out there that she was able to get Bruce Horak to narrate the audio book version of Lunar Logic.

She has her very first Kickstarter for audiobook versions of her Robot Galaxy book series, It hasn’t officially launched yet, but it’d be real cool if you could click the ‘follow’ button it to help her along and you’ll be notified the moment it goes live.

Adeena can be found on her  website, Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Youtube.

Press Release: STAR TREK™:LORE WAR CROSSOVER EVENT ARRIVES MARCH 2025

LOS ANGELES, CA (September 4, 2024) – The single most devious mind in the universe has won. Commander Data’s evil brother, Lore, has used the Orb of Destruction to obliterate all of reality and remake it in his image while declaring himself its God. Now that Lore has claimed the ultimate victory, what happens next?

IDW Publishing is thrilled to announce LORE WAR, the compelling crossover event that has been planned since the STAR TREK line of comics relaunched two years ago with the Eisner-nominated milestone issue STAR TREK #400.

Cover A by Malachi Ward

Beginning in STAR TREK: LORE WAR #1 from acclaimed creators Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, Christopher Cantwell, and Davide Tinto, the crossover event will include the STAR TREK flagship ongoing series, STAR TREK: DEFIANT, and special one-shot tie-in issues. “This is it. The moment we’ve been building to since the Theseus left spacedock and the Defiant was stolen,” remarked Lanzing. ”The ultimate STAR TREK comics crossover event – as the heroes and villains of the galaxy must band together to defend its very existence.”

“Since the line’s inception, our grander story in both titles has dealt with STAR TREK’s concept of godlike beings and the rejection of those godlike beings — order and entropy as it exists throughout the four quadrants of the galaxy,” added Cantwell. “Who pulls the strings and who dares to cut them? LORE WAR is quite literally the apotheosis of that shared theme, two years in the making.”

“The gods are dead, and only one mad android holds the reins of our universe. With absolute power comes absolute corruption… but does it come with absolute control?” stated Kelly. “Featuring the incredible art of Davide Tinto – a newcomer to the Trek world – we’re not settling for anything less than the most impressive and world-ending STAR TREK event that comics can contain.”

Group Editor Heather Antos is thrilled to have fans finally see what they’ve been planning since the very beginning of the relaunch. “It’s all been building to this moment. No, literally. From the original prelude in STAR TREK #400 two years ago the road map has always led to LORE WAR. When Collin, Jackson, and Christopher first embarked on this mission we asked the question ‘Can a man be both man and a god?’ Well now Lore is answering.”

STAR TREK: LORE WAR #1 boldly beams into shops on March 26, 2025, and the crossover features primary covers by artist Malachi Ward. Fans can pre-order from their local comic shop. STAR TREK #500, which features the prelude story, is on sale now.

Out Today: “Star Trek Video Games”

Out today: “Star Trek Video Games“, by Mat Bradley-Tschirgi.

Star Trek video games have been around almost as long as Star Trek itself. From humble beginnings as an unofficial text-based game playable on mainframe computers to modern multi-million dollar spectacles, Star Trek video games span the history of gaming itself.

In Star Trek Video Games: An Unofficial Guide to the Final Frontier, author Mat Bradley-Tschirgi dives into notable Star Trek games across a variety of genres in his fun, humorous style with loads of aplomb. Whether they are based on the live-action or animated TV series, movies, or crossover scenarios, dozens of games (some memorable, some not so memorable) are covered in rich detail with proper historical context along the way.

Aside from its sometimes snarky text, this book features over 100 color photos showing off the wide variety of Star Trek video games covered within. There’s also interviews with game designers, writers, producers, and gaming journalists on select titles offering a behind the scenes look or color commentary on such fan favorites as Star Trek: Starfleet Command, Star Trek: Judgment Rites, Star Trek: Legacy, Star Trek: Resurgence, and more!

Relive memories of playing Star Trek games on Mac, PCs, consoles, handhelds, and mobile phones or discover new favorites to add to your collection. Whether you’ve played all the Star Trek games or are curious as to what the world of Trek gaming holds, Star Trek Video Games: An Unofficial Guide to the Final Frontier will make a fun addition to your home library.

Michael Dismuke Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com

This week’s interview is with Michael Dismuke who has his first Star Trek fiction printed in Star Trek Explorer #11 and is going to be included in the upcoming compilation Star Trek Explorer: A Year to the Day That I Saw Myself Die and Other Stories due out on October 1, 2024.   It’s not his first writing effort though, with plenty of other content already out there for you to enjoy, specifically on Continuing Mission.

The conversation runs about an hour and we discuss his Continuing Conversation podcast that covers all things STA and recent had a three part series with a play through of a mission with some familiar faces.  We shared our mutual appreciation for good clean stories that don’t have to rely on violence or extreme content and touched on how the unseen is scarier than showing everything on the screen, regardless of how great the graphics are.

His next Trek work is a starter pack that was just announced, you’ll be able to find it on the Modiphius website soon enough.  I’m not at all familiar with how to play STA, so this feels like something that will be right up my alley.

You can find Michael Dismuke on his  website, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Youtube.
