Getyourcomicon.co.uk has added a new review for and and ‘s “Star Trek: Lore War #1”:

Everything has been building to this moment. All of the plot threads woven throughout both IDW’s Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant series are coming together. The crossovers, the character work, all of the adventures interwoven across this entire initiative have led to this moment. The moment that Lore, Data’s evil brother, has taken over and reshaped reality in his own image. As the end of the series looms, can Trek pull off its biggest and most ambitious story yet?

Star Trek: Lower Decks #8

In a moment of mother-daughter bonding, Captain Freeman continues the story of how she was once a nobody screw-up just like Mariner! Where she last left off, Dr. Katherine Pulaski had taken the helm of the U.S.S. Illinois in its clash with a Romulan warbird-but, as feared, Pulaski’s brilliant track record of crashing spacecraft isn’t doing her any favors in the encounter. Freeman and Durango are called upon to save the day. If the crew is to survive, the two ensigns need to rise to the challenge of command… and fast!

Star Trek: Omega #1

Two and a half years of comics spanning 60 years of Star Trek history, a fair few awards, and more than a few universe detonations, and it’s all been coming to this! Star Trek: Omega is the denouement of the critically acclaimed Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant storylines, and the first glimpse at what comes after. The crews of the Theseus, Defiant, and Enterprise set to work restoring the universe to what it should be after the evil android Lore’s intervention. Each hero finds their peace in preordained or unexpected ways, with individual scenes depicted by one of Star Trek’s or Defiant’s mainline artists! This finale pays tribute to all those involved in the series Screen Rant calls “the gold standard for ambitious comic book storytelling.”

Donate to Rally for Mike W. Barr’s Medical Care, organized by Dave Kellogg

Mike W. Barr has been a writer of comics, science fiction novels and mystery novels over his 50 year career. Well known for his work on Batman (Batman and the Outsiders, Batman:Son of the Demon, among many other titles) and Star Trek titles spanning over the first 4 incarnations of the show–as well as his own creator-owned titles like Camelot 3000 and the Maze Agency, Mike has penned hundreds of memorable stories for us all to enjoy. When Mike was an editor he helped other talent bring their stories to publication. Now, Mike needs our help. Over the past few years, Mike has suffered some catastrophic medical setbacks; starting with multiple knee replacement surgeries. While in the hospital recovering, he was infected with COVID and is still suffering the effects of Long COVID. After he was discharged from the hospital in March of 2024, he returned home. Unfortunately, his condition left Mike unsteady on his feet and caused him to fall, striking his head. Mike lay unconscious on the floor for four days until he was finally found, badly dehydrated and suffering from a serious concussion. Following that, Mike spent several months hospitalized and underwent more surgeries. After being discharged again from the hospital, Mike continues to struggle with his health and needs additional physical therapy. Mike’s medical bills are mounting, far surpassing insurance limits, causing the shut down of further therapy. Without more therapy treatments his overall health is in question. Mike now needs financial help to continue to fund his recovery and to secure his treatment. We are asking for Mike’s many friends and fans to help support him in his future treatment and recovery. Every dollar will go towards living expenses and medical bills that are not covered by insurance. Your generosity, no matter how big or small, will make a tremendous difference in helping Mike to regain his health. Thank you. Posted by Dave (LB) Kellogg

“Late Star Trek: The Final Frontier in the Franchise Era” Review by Theunderline.substack.com

Theunderline.substack.com has added a new review for ‘s “Late Star Trek: The Final Frontier in the Franchise Era”:

The story Adam Kotsko traces in Late Star Trek: The Final Frontier in the Franchise Era (out today from University of Minnesota Press) is a story of learning—on one side fans learning far too much, memorizing and systematizing every bit of in-universe detail doled out over decades until the entire edifice threatens to collapse under its own weight; and on the other side, the executives and producers who have learned far too little, who have never understood what Star Trek is, why people like it, and its natural limitations as mainstream fare, who have repeated the same mistakes over and over, mismanaging the franchise in ways as predictable as they are dispiriting.

TrekLit Connection: Deep Space Spines

TrekLit Connections is a series of columns from authors, artists, fans, and publishers in which I give them space to tell you in their own words why they’re so deeply involved in TrekLit. My goal is be able to have at least one of these up a month and would love to hear from you if you’d like to talk about your own TrekLit Connections, find the FAQ page on how to contact!

This time we’re hearing from J.W. Eubanks, author of my personal favorite reading of the entire Star Trek chronology at Deep Space Spines. Every post is witty and has cutting insights into the best and the worst that Treklit has to offer. You can find him on Blue Sky!

Life has a functionally infinite number of branching paths. The culture(s) we’re surrounded by, the decisions we make, and our individual personality quirks can bring their formidable combined powers to bear on leading us down some very peculiar roads. Sometimes, you might even end up on one that makes you think it would be a good idea to critically assess every Pocket Books Star Trek novel ever written in the order in which they were published.

Deep Space Spines was the result of me winding up on that road, a swirling nebula borne of a few different qualities and happenstances. I’ve always enjoyed inexpensive collections with low barriers to entry, and mass market paperbacks fit that bill, especially if you know where to look. I also try to look for the obscurities in a given field, the parts that get ignored. I remember seeing a (possibly apocryphal) statistic that only 2 percent of Star Trek fans read the novels, and a lot of Memory Alpha and Beta articles contain only the barest skeletons of information, so I thought it’d be nice for there to be more than a stub available out there for as many of them as possible. Lastly, reconnecting with Star Trek when I did ended up providing a nice respite from the hopelessness the political figures in power at the time so sadistically reveled in making people feel.

The site’s most primordial origins trace back to 1993, when I was just nine years old. Trekkies tend to go back to near-infancy when ruminating on their fandom, which is probably slightly unnecessary in this case. I don’t think I have to breathlessly describe playing with the Playmates Next Generation action figures. But as far as connecting with the writing of Star Trek, the first relevant seed was planted when I got the Judgment Rites PC game for Christmas in 1993. The original series aired in syndication, but I was too put off by the Sixties aesthetic to give it a fair shake. Judgment Rites changed all that. Less than a year later, while browsing the shelves at Hastings (RIP to the GOAT), I bought my first Star Trek novel, Doctor’s Orders by Diane Duane. That one set a bar that few have since cleared. I read about nine or ten TOS novels throughout late elementary and middle school, then quietly dropped the habit. I didn’t revisit them again until 2015, when I wrote about Doctor’s Orders for a free WordPress blog that no longer exists. I planned the post to be part of a series, which I called The Spinal Frontier. I wish now that I had left the site up, or at the very least Waybacked it, because the post was very much an alpha version of the
ones that appear on Deep Space Spines today.

The idea of reviewing Star Trek novels started knocking around in my brain again a couple years later, when I worked overnights in the post-adjudication wing of a juvenile detention facility. The residents there had already been sentenced and were going through a program that would expunge their records upon successful completion. They went to bed an hour before my shift started and woke up an hour after it ended, and I only interacted with them if they had to pee. It was nice work if you could get it; I was basically a bathroom valet with CPR training. We had to peek into their rooms once every 15 minutes to make sure they weren’t covering their heads, but aside from that, we had the rest of the night to self-actualize however we wanted, as long as we were quiet.

I used the time to reread some beloved Trek books and try out some new ones, and realized I was really getting a kick out of it. At some point, I started reading in order from the beginning of my own volition. Then my birthday rolled around, and I decided to use the gift cash from that to buy a domain. My wife came up with the name Deep Space Spines, and since I had nothing better, I ran with it. (Rebranding would be disastrous at this point, but a few years ago, I came up with Attention Bajoran Readers, and I still kinda like it better.)

Eight years later, I’m still reviewing Star Trek novels, though not at the breakneck pace the graveyard shift once enabled. Teaching doesn’t quite afford the same amount of spare time. Still, I continue to find joy in discovering novel character pairings, watching authors find clever ways to link events across timelines that were never meant to be connected, and of course never ceasing to be surprised that there are other people who are also into this weird little niche of mine.

I’ve built a few disparate bodies of work on the internet over the decade. Deep Space Spines may be the least known and viewed among them, but it is the one I am the proudest of. Every new review shines that much more light on a little-known and -explored facet of the Trekverse. And although Star Trek is far from free of flaws and problematic elements, it nevertheless feels better to put one’s faith in it and be a part of its community than many other series. It could very well take me the rest of my life to get through all the Trek tales Pocket Books published from 1979 to the present, but I’ve yet to lose the thrill of exploring strange new literary worlds.

Happy 2025 Birthday to K.W. Jeter!

Happy birthday to K.W. Jeter!

Kevin Wayne Jeter is an American science fiction and horror author from California.

Jeter was born in Los Angeles. At California State University, he met science fiction author Philip K. Dick. The esteemed science fiction writer based a character on him – Kevin in Valis. In common with Dick, his style of writing is known for its dark themes, and paranoid and sometimes unsympathetic characters. He has also written several sequels to Bladerunner, which began life as Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

His book Dr. Adder is considered by some to be the first true Cyberpunk novel. He also coined the phrase “Steampunk”, which refers to retro-technology.

Jeter has also written tie-ins to the Star Wars franchise.

He has lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, but now lives in Ecuador with his wife.

Out Today: “Late Star Trek: The Final Frontier in the Franchise Era”

Out today: “Late Star Trek: The Final Frontier in the Franchise Era“, by .

How Star Trek’s twenty-first-century reinventions illuminate the unique challenges and opportunities of franchise-style corporate storytelling

Late Star Trek explores the beloved science fiction franchise’s repeated attempts to reinvent itself after the end of its 1990s golden age. Beginning with the prequel series Enterprise, Adam Kotsko analyzes the wealth of content set within Star Trek’s sprawling continuity—including authorized books, the three J. J. Abrams “Kelvin Timeline” films, and the streaming series Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds—as well as fan discourse, to reflect on the perils and promise of the franchise as a unique form of storytelling.

Significantly including the licensed novels and comic books that fill out the Star Trek universe for its fans, Kotsko brings the multiple productions of the early twenty-first century together as a unified whole rather than analyzing them in their current stratified view. He argues that the variety of styles and approaches in this tumultuous era of Star Trek history provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the nature of the franchise storyworlds that now dominate popular culture. By taking the spin-offs and tie-ins seriously as creative attempts to tell a new story within an established universe, Late Star Trek highlights creative triumphs as well as the tendency for franchise faithfulness to get in the way of creating engaging characters and ideas.

Arguing forcefully against the prevailing consensus that franchises are a sign of cultural decay, Kotsko contends that the Star Trek universe exemplifies an approach to storytelling that has been perennial across cultures. Instead, he finds that what limits creativity within franchises is not their reliance on the familiar but their status as modern myths held not as common cultural heritage but rather owned as corporate intellectual property.

Deepspacespines.com has added a new review for ‘s “Star Trek: Insurrection”:

In today’s episode, a misguided admiral teams up with a mysterious partner to bring one planet’s Fountain of Youth to the rest of the Federation. But the scowling man with unnaturally stretch skin draped in robes and jewels seemed so trustworthy! Will there ever be another Search for Spock–level novelization? Does Picard have a crush on his dead mom? And shouldn’t Worf know more Earth references? All this and more in Star Trek: Insurrection, the film that un-grows the beard.

Happy 2025 Birthday to Judith Reeves-Stevens!

(no image available)

Happy birthday to Judith Reeves-Stevens!

Judith Evelyn Reeves-Stevens, together with her husband Garfield Reeves-Stevens, is one of Star Trek’s best-selling original book writers. Together, the Reeves-Stevens’ wrote or co-wrote five episodes of Star Trek: Enterprise’s fourth season. Being Star Trek: The Original Series fans, the couple had already written several fully licensed reference books on the subject of Star Trek previously, prior to becoming officially involved with the live-action franchise.

She, along with her husband, officially joined the production staff of an actual Star Trek production, Enterprise’s fourth season, at the insistence of producers Manny Coto and Michael Sussman, who needed writers imbued with a deep sense of original Star Trek lore to repair the perceived shortcomings original producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga had left. By the time the series concluded its third season, it arguably had become the most controversial of the television series, subject to inspired and vehement criticism of fans – and, as it turned out after-the-fact, by production staffers as well – for its perceived violations in established continuity. With both producers held responsible for the quick loss of viewer-ship, Paramount and UPN indicated its cancellation and the apparent end of Berman’s tenure as the overseer of Star Trek productions with the approach of the end of the third season. Though remaining credited, Berman and Braga were indeed essentially relegated to the role of figurehead by the franchise at the end of the third season, and their places were de facto filled for the last season by Coto and Sussman, under whose tenure much of the perceived continuity violations was redressed, aided by writers such as Judith and her husband, who, like them, had an equally thorough understanding of Star Trek lore. While the writer’s couple contributed to a season that, as a whole, was generally well received, it did not save the series, as its cancellation had already been decided upon.

Happy 2025 Birthday to S.D. Perry!

(no image available)

Happy birthday to S.D. Perry!

Stephani Danielle Perry is the author of many Star Trek novels and short stories.

S.D. Perry was born in the early 1970s and began to write media tie ins and novelizations in the mid-1990s. Her favorite Star Trek series is the original series, with her favorite characters being “The Big Three” – Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

She began to watch Star Trek: Deep Space Nine during its fourth season. Several characters from DS9 are her favorite Star Trek characters, including Elim Garak, Quark and Weyoun. One of the reasons she likes Spock is for his “pure animal magnetism”.

Perry saw an early copy of Andrew Robinson’s novel A Stitch in Time, which focused on Garak. Perry described it as “total genius, seriously, and no ghost writer. He adds new dimension to a very unusual character”

Perry has also written several Xena: Warrior Princess, Aliens and Resident Evil novels.

She currently lives in Portland, Oregon, and is married.

Lessaccurategrandmother.blogspot.com has added a new review for and and and and ‘s “Star Trek: The Next Generation: Hearts and Minds”:

Way back in installments #1 and 4 of this chronological marathon, I read two original series novels, From History’s Shadow and Elusive Salvation, because their events would be referenced in a Destiny-era book. Over seven years later, that connection finally pays off with Hearts and Minds, which provides a third and final installment to Dayton Ward’s “secret history” sequence of novels about the Aegis and the U.S. security apparatus. Was it all worth it? Well, I may have appreciated the connections more had I read the books closer together, like they were released. That, I suppose, is the downside of reading in chronological order.

New Star Trek Comic Books Announced To Preorder! March 2025 Edition

Star Trek #32

Part five of “Lore War.” Armed with the knowledge of how to defeat Lore once and for all, Sisko and what’s left of his crew scatter to the four quadrants of space. Spock, Hugh, Alexander, and Paris each set out alone on a mission to save their remaining friends from Lore’s control, but none is more alone than Sisko. He’s taking the fight directly to Lore in a final all-or-nothing standoff. Will he and the actions of his crew be enough to restore the universe and everyone to their rightful selves? Or will Lore win again and reset the universe as he’s done so many times before?

Star Trek: Defiant #27

Part four of “Lore War.” Sisko is approaching a moment of crisis: Lore is god of the universe, and the number of heroes operating outside his influence is dwindling with every encounter. Everywhere Sisko looks, he sees those he’s failed. Is he really the person meant to defeat Lore and restore his timeline? Just as he is about to set down the burden of leadership…he dreams of a familiar blue light…and remembers there is hope yet in the universe waiting for those with the courage to seek it out

Star Trek: Defiant, Volume 4: The Stars of Home

Connecting with the voyages of the ongoing Star Trek comic series, Defiant ventures into the dark side of the cosmos!

Original Star Trek: Defiant writer-artist duo Christopher Cantwell and Ángel Unzueta delve into the sci-fi horror genre in arc four of the fan-favorite series!

It’s the beginning of a new era for the disavowed, mercenary crew of the U.S.S. Defiant! Political corruption ensues as Sela and her father, General Revo, leverage the imprisoned Defiant crewmates to kidnap the Romulan praetor and chairman of Tal Shiar Intelligence to advance their sinister plot to take over Romulus…

This leaves Worf, B’Elanna, and Ro with two crewmates down, and a planet on the brink of Romulan invasion. Despite how hopeful the planet’s meager farming population is, what are three failed Starfleet officers and lowly resistance fighters to a heavily armed and technologically advanced Romulan strike team?

Collects issues #17–21 of the series.

Star Trek: Lore War–Shaxs’ Worst Day #1

From the team who brought you the Ringo- and Eisner-nominated Shaxs’ Best Day comes a rip-roaring ride full of clever ship high jinks, nonstop badassery, and bombastic punches… because at the end of the day, let’s face it. It’s not Shaxs’ worst day. It’s fascism’s. Shaxs had his best day, but now that the universe has been rewritten by the mad android Lore, he’s about to have his worst. Starfleet has been distorted into a machinery of oppression antithetical to everything it once stood for, and Shaxs has been made into the one thing he despises most in the universe: a fascist. Now free of Lore’s hold over his mind, it’s up to Shaxs to revert everyone in Starfleet back to their old selves and save the cosmos!

Star Trek: Lower Decks #7

There’s nothing quite like a mother-daughter relationship. There’s also nothing quite like finding out your monolith of a captain used to be a carefree ensign who accidentally vanished her whole crew in an experiment gone wrong. Lucky for Beckett Mariner, she gets to soak up both experiences all on the same day as her mother, Captain Freeman, regales her with a throwback tale of how she was “just like you when she was young,” and “mistakes help us grow, blah, blah.” Meanwhile, all Mariner wants to know is how could Freeman let Pulaski get away with hair like that?
