The collection of novels generally referred to as the Deep Space Nine Relaunch marked a bold experiment for Trek literature. Here were novels that didn’t only flesh out an existing storyline, but actively continued it. The run from Avatar to Unity essentially created an eighth season of the show. Avatar was a traditional two-part opener, and Rising Son gave Jake Sisko a starring role, The opening stages of this eighth season were a little jumbled, however. Abyss was part of the loosely tied Section 31 series, while demons of Air and Darkness fell in the middle of the Gateways epic. It was only with the Mission Gamma series that DS9 properly took centre stage once again.

“Book Authors”, “Narrators”, and “Cover Artist” have been removed as custom taxonomies on STBC
tl;dr: some of the links have changed and you won’t notice a thing. It took hundreds hours of work to make this happen though, so I’m here to toot my own horn and there’s still much work to be done.
It’s true! If you were to go to any of the old links for your favorite Treklit authors like Dayton Ward, David Mack, or Kelli Fitzpatrick, you’ll be automagically redirected to the new and improved “Credits” taxonomy, which is a fancy word for grouping or category. When I first started this site over a decade ago, my primary focus was just on the stories, so the only credit I cared about what the author. Then I started to add images for the books, which meant I started to be interested in cover artists, which for most part for the books were all a single person at a time like Keith Birdsong or Boris Vallejo. It was great that a book author and the cover artist were never the same person, so having different taxonomies for those positions was just fine.
Then I realized I should add the audio books, and it turns out that there’s a number of authors are also narrators. Shatner is a great example of this, he has narrated nearly never full length books that he wrote and I ended up with two different pages for his content, which was less than ideal. Adding social links, photos, and tracking which version of them I’m linking to, it was getting a little complicated but not horrendously so.
Then I started adding comic books and the situation became was more complicated with cover artists, interior artists, editors, authors, and nearly a dozen other possible credits to include and when I really thought it out, I realized that it’s going to be an incredibly complicated web of custom taxonomies if I were to create a new one for each new type of content creator, and nearly every interior artist of a comic book would also have a cover artist taxonomy and many of the authors were also editors or artists (John Byrne would have at least four different taxonomies!).
Then I made the decision to have magazines on the site and whew buddy if I thought having comics would make it complicated, credits for magazines are whole other ball of yarn. Fiction, non-fiction, interviewers, interviewees, and news posts were all going to be new taxonomies and people like Larry Nemecek would be in each of them.
The situation had an obvious solution, which is to move everyone over to a single taxonomy of “credits” then build a separate taxonomy of “roles” then tie the two of them together in a custom field on the book or the book cover for people that were doing specific credits for specific editions of the books, like narrators or cover variants for comics or magazines. It’s working out well that everyone on the main book page is just an author and can be treated like one if there’s no custom field, and for the most part everyone on the specific version of the book on the attachment page is a cover artist and can be assumed to be one of those if there’s no role custom field. I had to actually update all the audio books with the new role collections, so each of those will have examples of the news stuff. It looks exactly like the old stuff, just slightly different, you won’t notice a thing on the front end, but let me assure you, there are things happening in the background that are most impressive.
The work ahead of me is to manually go through each book that doesn’t have that field and get every credit I can. Easy enough to say here, but with the books, comics, and magazines, we’re talking about over 4,000 edits to be made, so it’s going to be slow going. I’m also going to need to figure out how to break out the roles on the author page and make sure that the various imports and conversions I did to make all this happen didn’t result in duplicate entries and if it did (spoilers, it did ) and I can remediate them (spoilers, I figured it out).
The not so great news is that with all those imports to be in a single taxonomy the “all authors” page ballooned to have a list of over 2,000 people on it, which was killing the server if more than 5 people hit it at the same time. Solution? Create a new “Credits” page to search for specific people. It also has a list of 51 random people to scratch my itch for having a list on that page.

George Zebrowski is a science fiction writer of over seventy short stories and forty books. He has authored a few Star Trek novels with his writing partner, Pamela Sargent.
He was born Jerzy Tadeus Zebrowski in Villach, Austria, of Polish descent and has lived in the USA since 1951. He continues to be interested in his Eastern European heritage, as evidence by his Beneath the Red Star: Studies on International Science Fiction, which collected his writings on SF behind the Iron Curtain.
He was part of the part of the earlier Clarion Science Fiction Writers’ Workshops. He has been nominated for the Theodore Sturgeon and Nebula awards, and won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award in 1999.

Nicholas Meyer directed Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. He wrote the screenplays for Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI. Though never credited for his efforts, Meyer rewrote much of the screenplay for The Wrath of Khan by combining several elements from earlier drafts. He is also largely responsible for the nautical influence that pervades The Wrath of Khan and its sequels, from the military essence of the red-jacket uniforms to the more heated and dramatic character of the battle sequences.

Late Star Trek explores the beloved science fiction franchise’s repeated attempts to reinvent itself after the end of its 1990s golden age. Beginning with the prequel series Enterprise, Adam Kotsko analyzes the wealth of content set within Star Trek’s sprawling continuity—including authorized books, the three J. J. Abrams “Kelvin Timeline” films, and the streaming series Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy, and Strange New Worlds—as well as fan discourse, to reflect on the perils and promise of the franchise as a unique form of storytelling.
Significantly including the licensed novels and comic books that fill out the Star Trek universe for its fans, Kotsko brings the multiple productions of the early twenty-first century together as a unified whole rather than analyzing them in their current stratified view. He argues that the variety of styles and approaches in this tumultuous era of Star Trek history provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the nature of the franchise storyworlds that now dominate popular culture. His short fiction can be found in such anthologies as Star Trek: Tales of the Dominion War, Star Trek: The Amazing Stories and Star Trek: Enterprise logs. Andy Mangels is a writer of many Star Trek novels, in collaboration with Michael A. Martin. Although some of his novels feature the recurring homosexual character of Ranul Keru (ex-lover of Star Trek: First Contact’s Lt. Hawk), contrary to some claims, he is not the first Trek writer to place a homosexual character in a novel (see The Best and the Brightest by Susan Wright for a minor character, and the Star Trek: SCE series of eBooks). Keru is the first significantly-featured homosexual character in paper novels, however, and Mangels (an openly gay man) and Martin have consistently featured characters of a diverse sexuality, as well as diverse ethnicities, religious backgrounds, and physical abilities, in all of their works.

Little has been said in canon about the Starfleet Academy careers of Una Chin-Riley (a.k.a. “Number One,” a.k.a. “Numero Una” “Don’t call her that. No one called her that.”) and Captain Christopher Pike. In the Strange New Worlds episode “Ad Astra per Aspera” we learn that Una’s admission to the Academy was sponsored by Captain Robert April, and that she first met Christopher Pike when she challenged his facts following an inspiring speech he gave at the Academy. We also know (from “Lost in Translation”) that one of her Academy instructors was Pelia, who gave her a “well-deserved” C on her final paper for Starship Maintenance 307. We also know that by the time she was at the Academy, Una had already been long accustomed to hiding her background as an Illyrian, lying to April, Pike, and all of Starfleet, out of fear of being arrested and drummed out of the Fleet for violating the Federation’s laws against genetic modifications.

Tony Daniel is the author of the Pocket TOS novels Devil’s Bargain and Savage Trade.
Daniel was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and currently lives in Raleigh North Carolina. He has a wife and two children. His first novel was the 1991 Candle, republished in 1993 as Warpath, which is about the settlement of other star systems by Native Americans.
An editor at Baen Books, he has authored a number of non-Trek novels and short stories. He has been nominated for a Hugo Award for his short story Life on the Moon in 1996.

Dave Stern is a Star Trek author and editor living in Massachusetts.
Writer of a number of stories in the universe, his first contribution was for DC Comics co-writing the eighteenth issue of their second TNG volume, “Forbidden Fruit”. Not long after, he wrote the audio adventure Transformations for George Takei.
Stern was also an editor on the Pocket Books Star Trek line, and worked heavily on the Enterprise series of novels, writing five of the tie-in books.
Most recently, he wrote the Original Series novel, The Children of Kings, and was hired on by Stardock to oversee creative storytelling and lore implementation for their Elemental: War of Magic game.

As a kid, I loved Choose Your Own Adventure novels—at least until I really, really didn’t. For a lonely, cerebral kid like me the concept was irresistible. I would get to escape into a story, but I would also be able to control the events! Something similar drew me to video games, but I gradually discovered that, like the earliest Nintendo games, CYOA books tended to be punitively difficult and maddeningly frustrating. No sooner had I worked my way to something interesting, finally, when I would invariably make some arbitrary error. Somehow I was just supposed to know that you shouldn’t mention the South Pole when time-traveling to the Middle Ages, or that saying “hi” rather than “hello” would lead to me getting pushed out the airlock. When my mom finally decided to defy my wishes and buy me a regular, linear novel at the book fair instead of yet another CYOA, I was initially annoyed, but I quickly learned the pleasures of a story that is carefully crafted not to kill the hero in dozens if not hundreds of random ways.

Golden is currently writing three books in the major nine-book Star Wars series Fate of the Jedi, in collaboration with Aaron Allston and Troy Denning. Her first book in the series, Omen, is slated for publication in July of 2009. Golden lives in Colorado with her husband and two cats.

Jon Ciccolini and Bill Rehor of Beadle & Grimm took an hour of their busy day to talk to me about their upcoming Star Trek Murder Mystery and Escape Room games that’s currently on Kickstarter for a surprisingly low price for a game that’s going to have an AR component and some form of participation from Star Trek: Picard actor Todd Stashwick.
I’ve never played a murder mystery table top game before, nor an escape room game, but the concept is super intriguing to me, so if you’re in the same boat, you may appreciate the naive questions, and if you’re already familiar with the concepts, I hope you find my ignorance endearing.
The murder mystery is set on the Titan-A whilst captained by Liam Shaw and you need to clear a character’s name while various murder related shenanigans are playing out through the game artifacts. You can use your phone to interact with the universe with an app and it has the ability to give hints if you get stuck in the narrative.
The escape room is set during Strange New Worlds and involves a ghost ship that you’re going to investigate and presumably escape from.
Both games are on the same Star Trek Kick-Starter and you get a heck of a discount if you buy them both at the same time, but you don’t have very long to make it happen, it’s closing this Friday on November 22nd!
