Out today: “The Tao of Spock: How Vulcan Philosophy Intersects with Taoism In the Star Trek Universe“, by Joseph Di Lella.
The beloved character of Mr. Spock in the Star Trek franchise has earned respect not only for his heroism and principled way of life, but also for the philosophical path of existence of his people he from Vulcan. Spock, a half-human, half-Vulcan, tries to live his life through the teaching of Surak – a non-violent branch of both Stoicism and Humanism. Through this approach with others, the Trek character shows his logical side, and yet there is another philosophical stance that often intersects with Spock’s behavior – Taoism.
Lao Tzu, a composite character of Chinese origin, also taught his followers how to approach life. Tzu’s Tao Te Ching deals with the areas of nature, political power, social interactions, family, and peace, among the most important areas of life humans must find their way.
Spock, a character from Gene Roddenberry, displays both the collective knowledge of Surak the Vulcan and Tzu the Chinese philosopher, as he helps Captain James T. Kirk and his fellow crew mates about the USS Enterprise as they explore the galaxy.
This book attempts to show you, the devoted Star Trek fan, how one Vulcan helped changed his universe through the teachings of Surak and Tzu in his search for peaceful co-existence even with the most vile and aggressive aliens, and humans, in the Alpha Quadrant.. If not for his efforts, the Roddenberry Universe would be a much more violent, war-like place.

Happy birthday to John J. Ordover!
John J. Ordover is a former editor at Pocket Books, and for many years he was responsible for overseeing the company’s line of Star Trek books. He is partially responsible for the “rebirth” of Star Trek fiction in the 1990s, being the driving force behind series-bending concepts such as the Invasion! miniseries, the Eugenics Wars novels, and Star Trek: New Frontier, Trek’s first novel-only series. He also edited the first seven volumes of the Strange New Worlds anthologies.
In August of 2003, Ordover left Pocket books to start up a book packager (though he did continue to work on a few projects he had left at Pocket), but ended up a part-owner of Phobos Books where he holds the title of editor-in-chief. There, he was responsible for the development of the new Phobos Impact Science Fiction and Fantasy lines, presenting the forthcoming novels All Eve’s Hallows by Dean Wesley Smith (September, 2005) Dragon America by Mike Resnick (also September, 2005), Sword of Orion by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller (October, 2005), Blood and Roses by Ann Tonsor Zeddies (November, 2005), The Genesis Project by Dayton Ward (January, 2006) Luna City Special Investigations: Dead Man on the Moon by Stephen Harper (February, 2006) and Phobos Rising by L.A. In 2000, Ordover won the Psi Phi Award for Lifetime Achievement. It was subsequently nicknamed “the Ordie” in his honor.

Horrors from Starfleet’s past are back with a vengeance in this miniseries. To save the ship, Picard and crew will have to become monsters themselves!
The evil Redjac presence—a.k.a. Jack the Ripper from the Star Trek episode “Wolf in the Fold”—has returned. And this time it has a new terrifying tool at its disposal: the holodeck. As Redjac seizes control of Picard’s Enterprise and spreads holographic horror, the only way for the crew to resist insanity is to become one with their fears. Ship counselor Commander Deanna Troi concocts a daring plan for an away team to become hypnotized holodeck-incarnations of timeless horror monsters, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, and others. Once they infiltrate the illusions, they can fight fear with fear. However, will they be able to defeat Redjac and break their hypnosis before their minds are permanently altered? Or will the crew be stuck as movie monsters forever?
Star Trek: Picard’s Academy: Commit No Mistakes TPB
Go back to academy days with one of Starfleet’s most celebrated officers: Jean-Luc Picard! A new collected series by New York Times best-selling author, Sam Maggs.

His path forward was charted: blow his classmates out of the water on the infamous Evasive Maneuvers exam and graduate early. Federation starships aren’t run by a party of one, after all. During the training exercise, Picard accidentally puts the lives of himself and two of his classmates—Doq and Marty—in danger!

New Star Trek Book: “The Tao of Spock: How Vulcan Philosophy Intersects with Taoism In the Star Trek Universe”
Tags:Book Added To Site, Joseph Di Lella, New Book Announcement
The Tao of Spock: How Vulcan Philosophy Intersects with Taoism In the Star Trek Universe by Joseph Di Lella has been added to the Star Trek Book Club!

New Star Trek Book: “Star Trek and the Tragic Hybrid: Children of Two Worlds from Spock to Soji”
Tags:Book Added To Site, Carolyn Burlingame-Goff, New Book Announcement
Star Trek and the Tragic Hybrid: Children of Two Worlds from Spock to Soji by Carolyn Burlingame-Goff has been added to the Star Trek Book Club!
Spock, Data, Worf, B’Elanna Torres, Seven of Nine, Odo, Michael Burnham, Soji. Many of Star Trek’s most beloved characters are children of two worlds, the products of competing biologies, materials, and cultures. Their popularity is unsurprising: authors mine conflicted identities for dramatic effect, and viewers see their own struggles reflected in the challenges of individuals who never seem to quite fit in.
This book demonstrates that the tradition is not new. Spock and his fellow hybrids have their roots in anti-slavery literature. Abolitionist authors introduced protagonists who were both Black and White, yet not fully accepted as either. Divided at their core, the attempts of these noble yet tortured individuals to bridge their two races inevitably ended in tragedy. Gene Roddenberry and his successors thrust the character type into the future, using it to explore the evolving racial attitudes of their times. Star Trek’s tragic hybrids have asked audiences to see beyond color, to embrace multiculturism, to accept mixed-race identity, and, finally, to acknowledge the consequences of systemic oppression.
The book is currently scheduled to be published on June 25, 2024

It’s an excellent story that shows us considerable parts of the journey the character took between her TV appearances, and feels very in keeping with everything we know from the shows. Trekcentral.net has added a new review for Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing‘s “Star Trek #19”:
Star Trek #19 kicks off the start of a brand new arc titled “Pleroma.” A quick Google of this word defines it as “the totality of divine powers.” This lines up with the themes of this series thus far, as each story arc has dealt with the crew facing divine entities. Sisko himself is somewhat of a divine entity. The issue was slower in pace as the bulk of it was spent setting up the new storyline, but there are still some interesting beats and character moments worth discussing.
