Aaron Rosenberg Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com
Aaron Rosenberg has been going to Shore Leave for about 15 years. He’s based in NYC and is among a group of authors that would routinely get together for lunch and most of them were already going to the show and they convinced him to go to the show. One of the cooler parts of our conversation was the bit were we talked about the science stuff that happens at the show, everything from bottle rockets to astronomy (and the Hubble team is going to be there this year!). He’s written for many familiar properties including Warhammer, Starcraft, Stargate: Atlantis, Eureka, X-Files, Deadlands, and the one that owns my heart: Star Trek, specifically the SCE series.
He’s published over 54 novels, has 70 some odd RPG credits, 12 children’s books, 12 educational books, and over 65 short stories. He’s not just a writer though, he’s also been doing book layout as a day job on an off again for about 20 years. We spend an appropriately long time talking about the importance of fonts, layout choices, and layout designs. He first started as an RPG writers, but doesn’t currently have any work with the ongoing Modiphius series, but did do work for Last Unicorn when they had the license.
His most recent book is Cases by Candlelight, a collection of Sherlock Holmes adventures by some pretty familiar names. Coming soon will be his new series “BEO: Bureau of Eldrich Oversight” in which an agent of the Bureau is stationed in a backwater station, is angry at being put on the back burner, but then as things tend to go in stories like these, not everything is what it appears.
We talk about his membership in the IAMTW and how the organization came to be, and that the association is now publishing their own series of anthologies, written by the talented members.
Aaron Rosenberg can be found on his Website, Facebook, and Twitter.
Keith R.A. DeCandido Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com
This is the longest of the interviews, we started talked and just straight up didn’t stop for another hour and a half later, there was just so much to talk about and Mr DeCandido is as affable of a person that I could ever want to talk to. It helped that he’s been going to Shore Leave since 1992 when he went with the intent to interview authors and actors at the show, and ultimately did a ton of interviews. He skipped a few years and returned in 2000 and was very much an official Star Trek author by that point. He’s been to pretty much every show since then and at once point even stood in as a backup singer for George Takei during a musical number. He’s even part of a band that plays at most of the shows, but due to the schedule change won’t be at the show this year (boooo).
Here’s Keith in the background during a previous performance:
We spoke about his next book, Feat of Clay, which is current in the Kickstarter phase. It’s already hit it’s goals, but it’s always nice to see more support come in for it.
During the wild west days of digital readers, before the Kindle came along, Star Trek had The Starfleet Corps of Engineers, a series of novella length stories that would come out on a regular basis. It wasn’t necessarily a subscription service, but you could count on a new one being out frequently. It was unfortunately canceled right before the Kindle took off and we have a great conversation about how cool it would be to have something like this again, especially with modern subscription services (Patreon, substack, Webtoons, etc) being generally accepted.
There’s a ton of other stuff discussed ranging from writer’s revenue streams, the publishers he’s worked for, the licensed properties he’s worked for (including but not limited to Resident Evil, Supernatural, Farscape), and the next collection of Star Trek short fiction that’s due out in October.
This was a fantastic conversation that’s worth your time!
Keith R.A. DeCandido can be found at his Website, on Facebook, Instagram, Patreon, and Twitter.
Scott Pearson Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com
Had a lovely talk with Scott Pearson a few weeks ago, and I mention this in the intro to the video, but we were having some pretty rough audio issues for a while here, but we eventually figured it out and go on with the conversation. As with the other interviews, the entry to the talk is Shore Leave 44. He’s been going to the show since 2006, right after his second Strange New Worlds story was published, and has been trying to make it to the show ever since.
He was able to offer some great insight into working with licensed properties (no making up new family members in books, only movies and tv!), and we briefly discuss the fact that he’s one of the few Trek authors that has books that were only digitally published and never made it to paper.
He’s currently doing a Hammer rewatch with a write up of each movie. He’s a fan of the classic monster films, Dracula, and Frankenstein. I tried a few times to talk him into doing a mash up of classic horror icons and Trek, we’ll see how far that idea gets!
Scott can be found at his own site, Facebook, and Twitter.
Kelli Fitzpatrick Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com
As you may have heard, I’m headed to Shore Leave 44 and I’m interviewing authors that have been going to the show and have knowledge to impart. I just got off a call with Kelli Fitzpatrick, who’s been going to shore leave since 2017, just a year after her debut as a Star Trek author in the 2016 edition of Strange New Worlds. She’s attended many years of Shore Leave, including the virtual editions but was happy to get back to the in person events.
We spoke about her upcoming Captain Marvel: Declassified book, due out in March of 2025, and talked about how complex the character’s story has been in the comics, and how she’s taken that complicated set of stories and found the common throughline.
She was recently included in Women Take the Conn, a series of essays on Trek that had a novel take on academic essays: pick one female character from TOS and take a deep dive into what makes them tick.
Fun fact about Kelli is that she’s been working with Modiphius to create content for their series of Trek RPG books, both behind the scenes and on the printed page. I’ve still not been able to find a group to play this with, but the single player version of the game was recently released and it sounds like it might be my route into the game.
Her next couple books due to be out? A Space Western and an actual honest to goodness traditional western story that connects to her love of astronomy.
Kelli can be found on Facebook, Twitter, Blue Sky, or even on her own website.

Users seek alternatives as Google is intent on app-centric focus.
I’ve already made the decision that my current fitbit will likely be my last fitbit, there’s just too many negatives for the device. My current frustration is that they took away the ability to customize what’s on your in-App dashboard, so you have to see the same stuff that everyone else sees. I have no need to see how much water I’ve consumed or calories burned, I just want the time, my steps, and my heart rate.

“Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man” Review by Warpfactortrek.com
Warpfactortrek.com has added a new review for David Fisher and William Shatner‘s “Leonard: My Fifty-Year Friendship with a Remarkable Man”:
In this book by William Shatner and David Fisher, Shatner chronicles the relationship between himself and Leonard Nimoy that lasted for fifty years. When I happened upon the book recently, initially I decided not to read it because I thought I already knew most of what it would contain. However, I was mistaken and pleasantly surprised by how much I learned.

Greg Cox Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com
I’m going to Shore Leave!
I’m interviewing authors before I go
Greg Cox Is The Second Guest
I had no technical issues and everything went fantastic!
Mr Greg Cox has been writing Star Trek books for over 30 years with over 19 novels published with Trek and has been writing in many other franchise playgrounds including CSI, Buffy, Green Hornet, Warehouse 13, The Librarians, Batman, Planet of the Apes, and Godzilla were among the ones mentioned in this interview, but there’s surely more!
He has a book coming out later this month, Star Trek: Lost to Eternity, a 130,000 word story involving three different time periods all working over connecting mysteries. He helped give Una Chin Riley her name, which one of the few bits of canon that originated in the books and made it to the screen, as verified by Anson Mount himself.
The tail end of this interview has a fair bit of interesting setup for the forthcoming book, I’ve already preordered it myself, so why haven’t you?

Howard Weinstein Interview With StarTrekBookClub.com
I’m going to Shore Leave!
I’m interviewing authors before I go
Howard Weinstein Is The First Victim
I had some technical issues, but Mr Weinstein was very understanding about it and we had a great chat
As I may have mentioned, I’m on my way to my first experience at a Star Trek convention, Shore Leave. I was lucky enough to speak to Mr Weinstein about the show, and had a great conversation with him about the nearly decades of experience he as as both an attendee and as a guest. That’s the basis for the chat, but we definitely don’t stay on just that one topic.
We discuss a ton of other items of interest including his recently released “Galloway’s Gamble 2: Lucifer & The Great Baltimore Brawl“, the second entry into his historical fiction series involving two brothers, horse racing, and plenty of action, his support for the upcoming “Silverado Press Presents“, an anthology of stories by some very familiar names for Trek fans, and spoke of his first corgi named “Mail Order Annie” and how she inspired him to start a career training dogs. She gave him enough life experiences and lessons to fill a 224 page book:
A Welsh Corgi pup named Mail Order Annie honked car horns, vanquished baby gates, schemed after cookies, donuts and room-service sandwiches, starred at STAR TREK conventions…and charmed everyone she met. But charm doesn’t mean a puppy won’t eat the kitchen walls! Best-selling author-turned-trainer Howard Weinstein tells Annie’s story in a truly universal dog book, and shares his hard-won expertise — Giving new pup-owners training tips and a clear idea of what to expect from life with a wonderful dog, including “Puppy Prep 101” and “Puppy School 202” — Helping current dog-owners get the most from the human-canine relationship — Sharing stories to touch the hearts of all dog-lovers. Written with a journalist’s eye for truth and detail, a novelist’s story-telling skills, and a professional trainer’s practical observations and experience… Straight from Annie’s heart to yours!

“Star Trek: New Earth: Book 1: Wagon Train To The Stars” Review by Treknews.net
Treknews.net has added a new review for Diane Carey‘s “Star Trek: New Earth: Book 1: Wagon Train To The Stars”:
If your ears perk up at the pairing of Star Trek and the phrase “wagon train to the stars,” there’s a good reason: Gene Roddenberry once described his idea for Star Trek in those exact words. Surprisingly, it took until the turn of the millennium for a Star Trek narrative to use this exact adventurous ethos. As we can assume after reading this 24-year-old book, readers in 2000 would have quite enjoyed the adventurous situation Captain James Kirk and his veteran crew find themselves in.

I’m headed to Shore Leave 44!
July 26 – 28, 2024
Wyndham Lancaster Resort and Convention Center in Lancaster, PA
After many years of saving, I’m heading off on a trip to visit the fine folks at Shore Leave, this being the 44th event they’ve hosted. This is going to be their first year at a new location (the old one is no longer among the living), so it’s a great jumping on point and gives me the opportunity to meet a significant number of authors that I’ve written and told you all about. The list includes: Aaron Rosenberg, Amy Sisson, Christopher L. Bennett, David Gerrold, David Mack, Dayton Ward, Derek Tyler Attico, diana dru botsford, Greg Cox, Howard Weinstein, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Kelli Fitzpatrick, Laura Ware, Lorraine Anderson, Michael Jan Friedman, Rigel Ailur, and Scott Pearson. The authors in bold are ones that agreed to a pre-show interview, most of which are already done and just need some editing and framing from yours truly. The interviews all have fun technical problems (guess I need to record their mics too?), fun nature problems (Florida thunderstorm in the middle of KRAD’s time), and possible interruptions by cats. I’m enthusiastic about the content, but far from top level professional. Yet.
The interviews will start dropping soon, and I plan on having an after action post about what went on up there along with pictures, if I can remember to take some while I’m all amped up to meet cool Trek people. I’m told there’s also going to be a number of tv / movie personalities there as well, but they’re outside the scope of what I’m working on here.

Happy 2024 Birthday to Ronald D. Moore!

Happy birthday to Ronald D. Moore!
Ronald “Ron” Dowl Moore is a writer and producer of several Star Trek series and films, as well as several other science fiction and genre programs. Moore was recognized for his writing work on the Star Trek franchise with seven award nominations, winning two of them. In his post-Star Trek years, he greatly added to this list of laurels.
While residing in Los Angeles as a struggling and budding writer, Ron Moore started to date a woman who worked on the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In 1989, Moore, an avid fan of the original Star Trek, convinced her to take him on a tour of the lot. He had written a script for the show, which the producers liked enough to actually film. It became “The Bonding”, and Moore was soon hired as a staff writer.
He remained at that position until the end of the series. He co-wrote 27 episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation including the series finale, “All Good Things…” for which he won the Hugo Award for excellence in science fiction writing along with Brannon Braga. Moore and Braga also co-wrote two films featuring the Next Generation cast, Star Trek Generations and Star Trek: First Contact. As producer of TNG in 1994, Moore shared an Emmy Award nomination when the series was nominated as Outstanding Drama Series that year.

Sometimes it gets to be a little much.

Happy 2024 Birthday to Marc Okrand!
Happy birthday to Marc Okrand!
Marc Okrand is the inventor of the Klingon language. He initially created the Vulcan dialogue in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. He was hired by Paramount Pictures to invent the language and coach the actors on Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country. Okrand’s basis for the Klingon language came from the few samples spoken in Star Trek: The Motion Picture which were made up by James Doohan. He is also famous as the author of The Klingon Dictionary and all its addenda.
On Disc 2 of the Star Trek III: The Search for Spock DVD, Okrand said he was asked to create Klingonese for scenes that had already been shot in English. During post-production, he turned off the sound and observed the actors’ lip movements as they spoke their lines. From these movements, he developed new vocal “sounds” for the actors to dub over their original English. He was asked to do the same for Spock and Saavik in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, during their brief discussion about Kirk in the Torpedo Bay. Okrand was also interviewed on 21 August 1991 for the TNG Season 5 DVD special feature “Alien Speak” (“The Klingon Linguist”).
Okrand previously worked with Native American languages, from which he borrowed the unusual Klingon tlh [IPA: /t͡ɬ/] sound (common in North and Central American indigenous languages, in which it is usually transcribed as tl; this is the sound at the end of the word “Nahuatl” as the Aztecs pronounced it themselves).
Recent work includes the Atlantean language which he was hired to do for Disney’s film Atlantis: The Lost Empire, which featured the voice of Leonard Nimoy. He also contributed Klingon and Vulcan dialogue for several episodes of the fourth season of Star Trek: Enterprise. He was a consultant for the Klingon, Romulan and Vulcan languages on 2009’s Star Trek and served as an uncredited consultant on Star Trek Into Darkness.

Out Today: “The Art of George Wilson”
Out today: “The Art of George Wilson“, by Anthony Taylor.
What made many of the great adventure comics of the 1960s so attractive were their fantastic painted covers by artist George Wilson. Wilson’s covers harkened back to the era of pulp magazines and were spectacularly eye-catching. He turned in efforts for literally hundreds of comics titles including: Classics Illustrated, The Twilight Zone, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Dr. Solar, Magnus Robot Fighter, Turok, Son of Stone and Star Trek, to name but a few. This new art book focuses on over 300 examples of his cover art and features numerous examples of Wilson’s artwork scanned from the originals together with many of the book covers he created including his extensive run on Avon’s The Phantom.

Out Today: “Strange Novel Worlds”
Out today: “Strange Novel Worlds“.
Since the publication of the first James Blish novelizations of Star Trek episodes in 1967, close to 900 tie-in novels, anthologies, and omnibus editions have been published. Star Trek tie-in novels have had a significant influence on Western popular culture. The works of beloved science fiction authors have shaped the way fans understand Star Trek and its universe, and many stand as near equal builders of the Star Trek franchise, next to Gene Roddenberry, his producers, and the many creators of the later series. With such a vast and varied body of work, tie-in books form a rich and deep cultural phenomenon, the history and content of which are worthy of concerted study.
Despite the enduring popularity of the franchise they are based on, no previous essay collection has ever focused on the numerous and widely diverse books of Star Trek tie-in novels. This collection does just that by examining the tie-in works as relevant literature. The essays primarily focus on tie-in books published from 1990 to 2022, and each author discusses the plot and context of separate novels while simultaneously exploring major themes such as canon vs. fanfiction and merits of the genre. The collection ends with an exploration of the continuity of this period of Star Trek as it stands following a narrative conclusion announced in 2021.

Happy birthday to Jeri Taylor!
Jeri Cecile Taylor is a television writer and producer best known for her contributions to the Star Trek franchise. Born in Bloomington, Indiana, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Indiana University in 1959 , and her Master’s degree in English from California State University at Northridge. She is the mother of two time Star Trek: The Next Generation guest star and recurring Star Trek: Voyager actor Alexander Enberg.
Prior to joining Star Trek, Taylor was a producer, story editor, and occasional director on the hit medical series Quincy, M.E., on which Trek guest performers Robert Ito and Garry Walberg were regular cast members. She went on to serve as producer and writer for such series as Magnum, P.I., In the Heat of the Night, and Jake and the Fatman. She also directed episodes of the latter series. In addition, she co-wrote the 1987 CBS TV movie A Place to Call Home, for which she also served as supervising producer. She was also a producer of the short-lived TV adaptation of the film Blue Thunder, whose guest stars included Tracy Scoggins, Sam Anderson, Ray Wise, John Hancock, Robert DoQui and Kurtwood Smith.
She joined the staff of Star Trek: The Next Generation as supervising producer in 1990 and held that position through the show’s fifth season. She then served as co-executive producer for the show’s sixth season, and was then promoted to executive producer for its final season, and served as showrunner for the final year, as Michael Piller was primarily occupied with Star Trek: Deep Space Nine at the time. She also co-wrote three episodes of Deep Space Nine during the latter period. Additionally, she assisted in the production of the Trek films Star Trek Generations and Star Trek: First Contact, receiving special thanks notices in each of the film’s end credits for her contributions. Working in the business since 1976, Taylor was asked to join the staff after rewriting the episode “Suddenly Human”. (“Chronicles from the Final Frontier”, TNG Season 4 DVD special feature)

It’s now or never for the Defiant crew if they are to survive the parasitic infestation on the isolated Section 31 outpost Starbase 99. But with B’Elanna still connected to both Borg ally Hugh and the parasite hivemind, Nymira nowhere to be found, and a giant portal connecting their reality to a horde of hellish bugs just itching to burrow into each of their brain stems, things are looking dire at best. “Star Trek: Celebrations #1” Review by Womenatwarp.com
Womenatwarp.com has added a new review for Hannah Rose May and Magdalene Visaggio and Steve Orlando and Vita Ayala‘s “Star Trek: Celebrations #1”:
With Pride Month in full swing, you may have missed IDW’s gorgeous one-off anthology celebrating some of Star Trek’s most-loved characters. In Star Trek: Celebrations, IDW spotlights LGBTQIAP+ characters throughout the canon – Sulu, Raffi, Seven, Chapel, Stamets, Reno, and Mariner. (Interestingly, Culber, Adira, and Gray appear on the cover but not in the anthology. Culber and Stamets even have their own alternate cover but Stamets’s entry in the anthology is solely concerned with Reno. Fascinating.)

“Star Trek: The Next Generation: Pliable Truths” Review by Shastrix.com
Shastrix.com has added a new review for Dayton Ward‘s “Star Trek: The Next Generation: Pliable Truths”:
It feels like Star Trek, which is I suppose one of the best compliments for it. There’s a ton going on, so bigger than one episode, with a lot of plot strands to pull on and none of them seeming to dominate. This might make the book feel unfocussed, and I did at first wonder what the main plot actually was, before realising that it didn’t need to have a main plot to successfully tell stories about these characters.

“Star Trek: Voyager: The Captain’s Table: 4 Fire Ship” Review by Deepspacespines.com
Deepspacespines.com has added a new review for Diane Carey‘s “Star Trek: Voyager: The Captain’s Table: 4 Fire Ship”:
In today’s episode, when Janeway watches Voyager go up in flames, she lets the pod she was on when it happened carry her where it will. But when she ends up on a privateering vessel swabbing the deck, she has to face the fact that it might be the pirate’s life for her whether she likes it or not. At what age does every young adult start to seem like a baby? What does the order you list your children in say about you? And what’s the biggest ace Diane Carey has up her sleeve? All this and more in Fire Ship, the book that can admit when it’s time to fold ’em.

Out today: “Star Trek: Defiant HC #2“, by Christopher Cantwell.
Still reeling from the battle on Qo’noS, Worf and the Defiant crew have been ordered to return to Starfleet headquarters. Despite their heroic actions, the Federation can’t celebrate the crew’s involvement in the fight against Kahless and the Red Path. In fact, they’re forced to discharge Worf and his crew! Disavowed from Starfleet, Worf and his crew set out in their new roles as secret bounty hunters for the Federation. Their targets: untouchable criminals protected by treaties and alliances. They’ll take on villains from across Star Trek’s history such as an individualized ex-member of the Borg Collective, a time-traveling con man from The Next Generation, and an alien gangster from Sigma Iotia II. “Star Trek: Voyager: String Theory: 2 Fusion” Review by Treklit.com
Treklit.com has added a new review for Kirsten Beyer‘s “Star Trek: Voyager: String Theory: 2 Fusion”:
Continuing the String Theory trilogy which began in James Swallow’s Cohesion, Fusion almost feels like a spooky ghost ship-type story as the tale of this mysterious region of space is picked up by author Kirsten Beyer. Many Star Trek book fans will know Kirsten as the author of the amazing run of post-finale Star Trek: Voyager novels that began with Full Circle back in 2009 and culminated in 2020’s To Lose the Earth. Her career has of course now expanded into the television arena, as she works as a writer and producer on a few of the new Star Trek series under Alex Kurtzman.

Star Trek Book Deals For Mid June 2024
While hanging out on the TrekBBS, I was made aware of this page on Amazon that lists at least 78 books on sale for $0.99 – $1.99 each, This list obviously includes the month long sale on select books, but also includes a large number of books that never make it to that list that may or may not be on sale for very long. I’ve been told from a few people that books are sometimes only on sale for just a couple days! I’ve bookmarked it and will be checking it for my own purposes every few days and will only be adding a post to the site here once a month around the 15th.
